Archaeologists are one of those professionals that link present and past civilizations. However, some people are still unaware of what Archaeologists really do and how these professionals make an impact in the lives of ordinary people. In this edition of The Top 100 Careers, join Felicia Gopaul as she interviews Eleanor Breen, our guest Archaeologist.


Eleanor Breen is a Historical Archaeologist who directs the archaeology program at George Washington’s Mount Vernon where she works since 2001. Eleanor has excavated sites in the mid-Atlantic region, many of which pertain to her research interests in plantation and African American archaeology.Eleanor_Breen

Her interests also include public archaeology and the dissemination of archaeological information to wide audiences. Recently, she oversaw an initiative called Archaeological Collections Online– the creation of an e-museum focused on Mount Vernon’s most significant site pertaining to the Washington households. Eleanor is a PhD candidate at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and her dissertation research explores differential access to goods during the eighteenth-century consumer revolution utilizing documentary and archaeological datasets from Mount Vernon.
