Growing cities usually face the issues stemming from the ever increasing population over time.  It is vital that plans on proper land use and optimization of infrastructure projects be in place.  Urban planning has become a very useful profession in the 21st century, during a time of the drastic increase in urban population as rural migrants added to the congestion in the already congested metropolis.

In today’s Top Career 100 interview series, let’s join Felicia Gopaul, president and founder of the College Funding Resource as she interviews our urban planning guest—Jennifer Sicialiano.

Sicialiano serves as the current City Planner and Deputy Director of Community Planning for the City of Woonsocket for the past three years. She acquired a Masters Degree in Regional Planning from the University of Massachusetts .

Her duties involve developing plans and programs for the use of land to be used by the different sectors.  For example, the government uses it in crafting plans in creating communities, accommodating population growth, and revitalizing physical facilities in towns, cities, counties, and metropolitan areas.

In this episode, Felicia and Sicialiano talk about different interesting things about the career of urban planning, including:

  • What made her decide on pursuing a career in urban planning
  • What are the contributions that urban planners do in community development
  • Why urban planning and planners are so important
  • What it takes to be a successful urban planner
  • What are the latest trends in urban planning that everyone interested in pursuing this career should know
  • How climate change affects the work of urban planners
