Court reporters, or stenographers, have been an essential element in the legal system by creating word-for-word transcriptions at trials, depositions, and other legal proceedings for the majority of the 19th and 20th centuries. Stenography is the method of recording the spoken words through shorthand using a stenotype machine. Some court reporters provide TV captions and real-time translation for the hearing-impaired at public events, at business meetings, or in classrooms. Being a court reporter is one of the most promising careers in the courtroom.

For today’s edition of the Top Career 100 Podcast, we will be joining Felicia Gopaul, founder and president of the College Funding Resource, as she talks with a vibrant and enthusiastic stenographer Kim Farkas.

Kim has been a court reporter for 27 years.   She is Realtime Certified by the National Court Reporters Association, and is state certified in Nevada and California. Some of the areas that she has worked include trials, depositions, board meetings and conventions.

  • How she became a court reporter and what was her personal journey to the profession
  • What are typical works that a court reporter does both inside and out of the court room
  • What are some of the attractive perks that most stenographers usually get
